Hospice Care Is…

As one of over 200 hospices in the UK we will be supporting Hospice Care Week (3-9 October) by holding a series of activities to encourage everyone to learn more about care in their local community and the support offered by St Teresa’s Hospice.

Every year we offer care and support to thousands of people in South Durham & North Yorkshire. This support is unique to the individual, helping those with a life-limiting illness to live life as fully as possible.

The theme for Hospice Care Week this year is ‘Hospice Care Is…’ and we are keen to show just how varied and surprising our work can be. Everything that we do is only possible because of the dedication of hundreds of skilled staff and volunteers.

We will highlight all the wonderful but maybe less well known things that we do and services that we offer, and we can make a feature of the staff and volunteers who are essential but may not always be in the front line.

Here are just some of the things we will be doing as part of Hospice Care Week 2016:

Pop-Up Stalls
Come for a chat and a free cookie with our team between 10am and 2pm in the Cornmill Centre (Mon 3rd) and Sainsbury’s, Victoria Road (Thurs 6th). We want to show that everything we do is available free of charge, and hospice care is also about coming together for a cuppa and a chat sometimes!

Retail Challenge
Our chain of retail outlets throughout our catchment area have been challenged to come up with window displays with their own take on the theme, incorporating items they have on sale that represent Hospice care in its many forms. Look out for their inventive creations!

Say Cheese!
Share what hospice care is to you by filling out a Hospice Care Week card (download a copy from our Facebook Page) and getting a picture of yourself holding it that you can share on your social media. Our team of volunteers and staff, as well as some of our patients, will be joining in too.

What do we say, what do we do?
Following Hospice Care Week our Family Support Team are holding the “What do we say, what do we do?” conference on Tuesday 11th October, aimed at those working with bereaved children. Throughout Hospice Care Week we will be highlighting this aspect of the care we provide.

We invite you to show your support on social media during Hospice Care Week, and to share your thoughts and experiences of what #hospicecareis to you. For more information visit
