The captain of a golf club got into full swing with his fundraising efforts to help a local hospice as it battles through the cost-of-living crisis.

Darlington Golf Club’s Peter Carter adopted St Teresa’s Hospice as his chosen charity and raised £7,774 over his term as captain of the Men’s Section.

Peter, of Darlington, organised a series of events to raise much-needed funds for the charity after seeing first-hand the care they provide.

“St Teresa’s Hospice has a place in my heart for all the care and attention they gave to my late father,” said Peter. “They do an amazing job, each and every one of them.”

Peter’s fundraising efforts included regular raffles and social nights; collection boxes in the clubhouse; an inauguration dinner; a captain’s weekend featuring a family fun day; a sportsman’s dinner; a fundraising dinner with proceeds being split between the men’s and women’s captains’ charities; and a captain’s farewell social evening.

Peter also supported the hospice’s fundraising events by providing prizes for their own raffles.

“It gives me great pleasure to present the total amount that I have raised over the year,” said Peter. “It has been wonderful seeing how everyone at the club has come together to support the fundraising. I would like to say a massive thanks to Tom Hird for raising £649 towards the total after having his hair and beard shaved off at the farewell evening”.

Tom’s Granda, Terry, was a member of Darlington Golf Club and had been cared for by the hospice’s rapid response and inpatient teams. When Tom found out that Peter was supporting St Teresa’s he decided to get involved with his own sponsored challenge to mark the end of Peter’s year as captain.

Communications and Marketing Manager at St Teresa’s Hospice John Paul Stabler said: “Peter has had a tremendous year as captain, and it has been a pleasure getting to know him. We can’t thank him and his fellow club members enough for their support at such a difficult time for the hospice.  “The funds that Peter has raised have helped us to continue our work to help the community of Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire.”
