Carers Support

At St Teresa’s Hospice we provide support for families, carers or friends of those diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

Many people do not see themselves as a ‘carer’ because providing help and support to another person is often seen as a natural part of family life or friendships. If you are looking after a friend or family member with a life-limiting illness, however, whether that’s driving them to hospital appointments, offering emotional support or helping with the practicalities of everyday life, then you may be eligible for a range of support, benefits and rights as a carer.

Being a carer doesn’t mean you’re no longer a partner, father, daughter etc., it simply means there is another dimension to your relationship. Also, many children and young adults have caring responsibilities or are affected by the illness of someone close to them. It’s important that their needs or concerns are recognised too. The Family Support Team at St Teresa’s Hospice is made up of experienced social workers, counsellors and support workers. We are here to listen to you and help you with whatever is important to you and your family

What do we offer?

  • Space to talk about how you are feeling – time for you!
  • Support with making decisions and future plans
  • Guidance about accessing appropriate care from social services, housing, NHS or other agencies
  • Complementary therapies and relaxation
  • Assistance to apply for grants from Macmillan and other funds which can go towards making life a little easier
  • A range of information and resources that may be of use to you and your family

We also have a Carers’ Support Group. This is a very friendly and informal meeting that offers you some time for yourself and an opportunity to meet other carers in a similar situation. Our Family Support team is also on hand to provide support, advice and information.
