From Long Hours to Meaningful Contribution: My Journey to Volunteering at St Teresa’s

Our HR Trustee Steve started volunteering at the hospice last year – we spoke to him about his journey to volunteering for St Teresa’s Hospice:

“After spending most of my career working long hours, I knew I would need something meaningful to focus on once I retired. I wanted to strike a balance—spending more time with my family while also staying mentally engaged. When I came across the opportunity to become an HR Trustee at St Teresa’s, I was immediately curious to learn more.

My connection with St Teresa’s began over a decade ago. After being diagnosed with cancer, I was referred to the hospice by Macmillan for therapy. It was a very difficult period. I was exhausted, stressed, and struggling to sleep. The support I received through massage, yoga, and gentle exercise made a significant difference. It helped me manage both the physical fatigue and the mental toll of treatment. More than that, I was struck by how friendly, welcoming, and genuinely caring the atmosphere was. It became clear to me just how vital this place is to so many.

I still remember sitting in the reception area, speaking with the volunteers. The warmth and professionalism left a lasting impression. So, when the HR Trustee role became available, it felt like the right fit. Having worked in HR as a Senior HR Manager within the global manufacturing sector since 1984, I’d gained a wealth of experience that I felt could be of real use here.

Today, in addition to serving as a Trustee, I also support the HR team behind the scenes one day a week. I’m involved in shaping strategic plans and delivering training. What really stands out at St Teresa’s is the commitment to excellence and the emphasis on strong, compassionate leadership. I find the work incredibly rewarding especially when I get to engage directly with staff through training and help drive positive change.

To anyone considering volunteering, my advice is simple: don’t be afraid to give it a go. Retirement doesn’t mean you have nothing left to offer quite the opposite. Your life and work experience can be incredibly valuable. St Teresa’s thrives on having a diverse mix of people with different backgrounds and skills. Volunteering offers structure, purpose, and the satisfaction of giving back in a way that matters.”
