We are saddened to hear of the death of Alasdair MacConachie OBE, Honorary President and former long-serving Chair of St Teresa’s Hospice.

Alasdair was a remarkable leader, known for his unwavering dedication and deep commitment to St Teresa’s Hospice. His devotion to our mission was unparalleled and he played a pivotal role in the evolution of St Teresa’s. The impact of his devotion to the hospice will continue to resonate for many years to come.

Alasdair’s kindness, wisdom and enduring belief in the importance of hospice care left an indelible mark on St Teresa’s Hospice and the people we serve. He was not only a leader but also a dear friend, whose warmth and generosity inspired everyone around him.

We will deeply miss Alasdair’s presence, but his legacy will forever remain a guiding light for St Teresa’s Hospice. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A personal tribute to Alasdair by Carol Charlton, the current Chair of St Teresa’s Hospice:

“We, at St Teresa’s Hospice, are sad to hear of the death of Alasdair. He had been Honorary President of the hospice for many years and a long-term supporter of our charity.

“Alasdair was one of a small number of people that were involved from the very beginning of Darlington’s exceptional hospice. Over the years, he helped to raise significant amounts of money that have helped sustain essential services for the benefit of many people of Darlington and surrounding areas.

“When I was appointed Chair, Alasdair was one of the first to offer his support. He said to me ‘If there’s anything you need for the hospice, please just ask’. This was typical of Alasdair’s generosity and willingness to help others in the community.”

A personal tribute to Alasdair by Nicola Myers, the Chief Executive of St Teresa’s Hospice:

“Alasdair was a rare combination of compassion and discipline – a true gentleman and an exceptional businessman. He had the ability to see the bigger picture while never losing sight of the important details. Alasdair played a pivotal role in leading the board and guiding the hospice through a period of significant growth, transforming it from a smaller charity into the larger, more-impactful organisation it is today. Despite his many commitments, he was always available to offer words of advice or support – a truly remarkable man.

“Alasdair was deeply committed to helping his community and had an unwavering belief in the importance of holistic hospice care. It was a great privilege to have known and worked with him. St Teresa’s Hospice owes much to his vision and dedication, and he will always be remembered with profound respect and deep gratitude.”
